The co-op itself is amazing. It’s not complicated and you can play through the entire story with three other people. I played it on the Steam Deck. Yep, that’s right the game supports cross-platform play. It also follows different stories and characters in each chapter. This game has a ton of replay value and is a total bang for your buck.
I came into this review very interested to see if the next-gen update could fix these audio issues; and from what I have seen it has, completely. In addition to bumping the visuals to 4k 60FPS, the audio has been rescued from its prison of silence, huzzah! Horde mode, multiplayer, even Horde XL, I never had an issue playing the next-gen version on a next-gen system. And while the visuals bump is nice, I never really had an issue with the old one, so that’s not so much a killer feature for me. What I did notice, especially in Horde Mode XL, is at least one noticeable shortcut the devs took in order to cram so many zekes on the screen at once: they don’t move their limbs…
These objectives range from protecting other survivors from waves of Zekes, escorting vehicles, throwing switches, grabbing car parts, or even loading missiles into a launcher and blowing up certain targets before you get overrun.

Once you end the Gathering phase, also referred to as the Adventure, it’s time to face the monster head on. You’ll now position your Hunters and the monster on the board. The monster always attacks first, and uses an attack drawn randomly from a deck of 11 Behaviour Cards. The monster’s behaviour directly determines what each Hunter can do in their turn, down to how many of them can act and how many attack cards they can play. Attack cards in turn determine how much damage is done to the monster, but must be “spent” by placing them on the stamina board in order to do things like dodge or sprint. When you are out of attack cards, you’ll need to wait until the resolution of a Time Card or other attack card clears your board.

The hunt begins with the monster’s activation where they flip over a card and perform its action. These include moving towards or away from heroes, melee or ranged attacks, inflicting physical or elemental damage, and applying various statuses. This card also informs how many hero turns you’ll get and how many attack cards can be played face up on the stamina board each turn.
Each deck has two cards that allow you to discard two cards from your stamina board and one card comes off each turn, including turns when you take preparation actions. The only other way to clear your board (besides fainting) is to use potions which also restore your health. Having the ability to discard cards you don’t want in your hand and draw back up grants a lot of control over how you work through your deck.
With all the negativity out of the way, what’s left to like? Quite a lot, starting with the combat system. The card stamina system takes a little while to get the hang of but it’s really satisfying when you combo cards together for powerful attacks. Trying to keep the number of cards down was a constant challenge, especially when multiple slots were taken up with dodging incoming hits.
