The base contains two layers of semi-precious malachite while the bottom side of the trophy bears the engraved year and name of each FIFA World Cup winner since 1974. • Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit the fifth set of back-to-back homers in Yankees World Series history in the first inning of Game 5. They joined 1977 Game 5 Thurman Munson and Reggie Jackson, 1964 Game 6 Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle, 1932 Game 3 Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig and 1928 Game 4 Ruth and Gehrig. The Yankees are the first team in World Series history to hit multiple home runs in the first inning of a game when facing elimination. With the Dodgers in Game 2, this was the first time there were multiple sets of back-to-back home runs in a single World Series.
• The Dodgers and Yankees had a World Series preview June 7-9 at Yankee Stadium, with Los Angeles winning two of the three games. Teoscar Hernández had a go-ahead, two-run double in the 11th inning of the first game, a 2-1 Dodgers win, then hit two homers in an 11-3 rout the next night. The Yanks salvaged the finale with a 6-4 win, powered by Trent Grisham’s three-run homer off Tyler Glasnow.
• Walker Buehler pitched the ninth, recording his first MLB save, regular season or postseason. His only other professional save was Aug. 13, 2017, for Triple-A Oklahoma City. Alex Verdugo and Max Muncy were in his lineup that day. He’d go on to make his MLB debut on Sept. 7. He had one save in college at Vanderbilt, as a freshman on May 11, 2013.

Yankees: All year, right through the American League Championship Series, the Yankees masked a propensity for sloppiness with overwhelming talent. They were the worst baserunning team in the majors during the regular season. They regularly committed defensive miscues. They were not as fundamentally sound as one would expect for a team this good. But the Yankees boasted superstars. They banged home runs. They out-talented teams.
The Dodgers and Yankees entered the 2024 MLB postseason as the top seeds in their respective leagues. The Dodgers had home-field advantage in the series due to their better regular season win-loss record. It was the 12th time in the Dodgers–Yankees rivalry that the teams have met in the World Series, but only the first instance since 1981. The teams had previously faced each other at least once per decade from the 1940s through the 1980s. The Yankees held a 6–1 edge in the World Series rivalry during the Brooklyn Dodgers/Subway Series era, and the teams were 2–2 following the Dodgers’ relocation to Los Angeles. In their 2024 World Series meeting, the Dodgers took a 3–0 series lead before losing Game 4 in New York. They would win their eighth World Series title the next day, coming back from a 5–0 deficit, a record for most runs to come from behind in a World Series clinching game.
After missing the postseason in 2023, the New York Yankees traded for star outfielder Juan Soto to help bolster their lineup. Soto and Aaron Judge helped the Yankees to lead the American League in runs and the MLB in home runs. Joining Soto and Judge as All-Stars were relief pitcher Clay Holmes. The Yankees’ closer role initially belonged to Holmes, but after recording an MLB-leading 11 blown saves, he lost the position. Luke Weaver took over the role in September and retained it throughout their postseason run. After not appearing in a game until June 19 due a spring training injury, reigning AL Cy Young award winner Gerrit Cole headed a deep rotation of starters including Carlos Rodón, rookie Luis Gil, Nestor Cortes, Marcus Stroman, and Clarke Schmidt. At the trade deadline, the team added Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Mark Leiter Jr.

Nov. 4, 2001 — D-backs 3, Yankees 2Luis Gonzalez’s walk-off bloop single off Mariano Rivera is one of the most iconic World Series moments of all time. That was just the end of a thrilling Game 7 that featured a battle between starters Roger Clemens and Curt Schilling, a shutdown relief effort by Randy Johnson and a game-tying double by Tony Womack off Mo before Gonzalez’s walk-off.
This World Series marks the first seven-game series in U.S. sports history in which the road team won every game. The Nationals took the first two games in Houston, and the Astros took the next three in D.C. The Nationals then wrapped up the series with the latest two victories back in Houston.
The fourth-seeded Nationals defeated the Milwaukee Brewers at home in the National League Wild Card Game, coming behind from a 3–1 deficit in the eighth inning to win 4–3. The Nationals then upset the top-seeded Los Angeles Dodgers, who had won the previous two National League pennants, in the National League Division Series. The Nationals were behind two games to one, and won their second and third elimination games of the postseason to take the best-of-five series. The postseason series win was the first in Washington Nationals history. In the best-of-seven National League Championship Series, the Nationals swept the St. Louis Cardinals (who had defeated the Braves in the Division Series round) in four games to secure the first pennant in franchise history (including their time as the Montreal Expos from 1969 to 2004). It was the first World Series appearance for a team from Washington D.C. since 1933, including 33 seasons that the city did not host an MLB team (1972–2004).
Game 7 featured a marquee pitchers’ duel between former Cy Young winners Max Scherzer for the Nationals and Greinke for the Astros. Scherzer was initially slated to start Game 5 before being a late scratch with an injured shoulder on the morning of the game. Scherzer showcased this injury rust, allowing two early runs in the second inning and never regaining his all-star form. Nevertheless, key seventh-inning home runs by Rendon and Kendrick opened up the scoring for the Nationals, eventually winning the game 6-2.
• Seven Game 7s and, again, 1912 Game 8, have ended in walk-off fashion. Two of them came in an LCS and the other six decided a World Series champion on the final play. All of the walk-offs were on hits except the Game 8 (a sacrifice fly surrendered by Christy Mathewson), but only two ended on home runs: Bill Mazeroski’s game-winner for the Pirates off Yanks pitcher Ralph Terry in 1960, and Boone’s dramatic solo shot off Red Sox reliever Tim Wakefield in the bottom of the 11th inning in Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS.
