World series 5 game highlights
Huge performance from Connor Brogdon, a 27-year-old beanpole who pitched to a 3.27 ERA over 44 innings this season. If the Phillies win this game, his two scoreless innings and five strikeouts will be near the top of the list of reasons why. The middle of Philadelphia’s bullpen was supposed to be a weakness; it has been excellent.
PHILADELPHIA — The World Series finally shifted Tuesday night to a town where it hadn’t been staged in 13 years, and there’s a freshness around the Philadelphia Phillies that is invigorating for the sport. The Houston Astros are the been there done that (by any means) crew. The Phillies boast a collection of stars — Bryce Harper, Rhys Hopkins, J.T. Realmuto, Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola — who have never been here. What a treat.
For the Phillies to win, with top reliever Seranthony Dominguez in the game early, Zach Eflin will likely have to do something he rarely has. Converted to relief late this season, Eflin has only pitched back-to-back days twice. (In his one outing on no days rest this postseason, he pitched around two singles for a scoreless inning, striking out none.)
Astros starter Justin Verlander worked his first clean inning the bottom of the fourth to protect Houston’s 2-1 lead. The veteran right-hander retired Jean Segura on a grounder to short and then struck out Brandon Marsh and Kyle Schwarber looking. Verlander has allowed one run on three hits, walked four and struck out four. He’s at 67 pitches.
Who won game 1 of the world series
10:56 p.m. — We have some controversy in Game 1. Kopech retired Austin Wells and Alex Verdugo, but with two outs, Torres lifts a pitch to the left field wall. A fan reaches over and catches the ball, making it a double instead of a go-ahead home run.
To suggest any of the games, however many remain, can match Game 1 is unfair — unless this is the sort of series where magic courses throughout, where two teams are so good, so evenly matched, so ready for the moment, so keen to win, that the hype is simply an accelerant. Maybe Game 2 on Saturday night continues where Game 1 so clearly delivered.
For Freddie Freeman’s Game 1 walk-off grand slam, Fox broadcaster Joe Davis’ call of “…she is gone!” echoed that of legendary Dodgers and then-NBC broadcaster Vin Scully for Kirk Gibson’s Game 1 walk-off home run in the 1988 World Series; and Davis also added, “Gibby, meet Freddie!”.
• Freeman’s grand slam was the third walk-off home run while trailing in World Series history. The other two are homers that fans would recognize by name alone: Joe Carter’s, in 1993 Game 6 for the Blue Jays against the Phillies, and Kirk Gibson’s, in 1988 Game 1 for the Dodgers against the A’s.
Over the past month, watching Freeman has been painful. Not only because throughout the Dodgers’ first 11 playoff games he hadn’t mustered an extra-base hit. Freeman is clearly in pain. His sprained ankle throbs. His body aches. He is an eight-time All-Star, a future Hall of Famer, a World Series champion with Atlanta in 2021. He had been through a brutal year already, with his 3-year-old son, Max, suffering through a bout of Guillain-Barré syndrome. Freeman kept pushing through the pain, hoping the five days off since the NLCS would do his body enough good to do something memorable.
